Bac Le, One of the Two Famous Temples Mau (i.e. Holy Mother) in the North Vietnam
Bac Le is an ancient temple pertaining to Tan Thanh Ward, Huu Lung District, Lang Son Province. The temple is located on a high hill, under the shadow of ancient trees that are hundreds of years old. No one knows exactly when this temple was built but it is believed that it had been a small hermitage often involving in fire accidents, according to the epitaph in 1919. Receiving offers from a patron originating from Hai Phong, Bac Le Temple was then restored into a house with three compartments, following the architectural arts of China. Later on, after many times of mending and restoring, this temple still keeps its traditional form and is added with some modern features. It has many antique relics such as: 19 small and large statues made from jackfruit wood, refined horizontal lacquered boards with parallel sentences, and so on.
The temple worships Ba Chua Thuong Ngan (i.e. the goddess providing and distributing the property from mountains and forests to human beings) - one of three Holy Mothers worshipped in the system of the folksy religion of Vietnamese people. This temple also worships Chau Be - a real person in Bac Le area. According to local residents in this region, Chau Be could perform retreatment of the inhabitants on behalf of Mau (the Holy Mother). On the occasions of Lunar New Year (Tet holidays) and September the 20th, this temple becomes bustling with the festival of offering sacrifices to Mau with many rites of "hau bong" (a person getting into a trance) or "len gia dong" (a kind of spiritual acting where actors incarnate into characters of Deities and Saints and do some actions like fencing swords or rowing boat).
