Decoupage question for real crafters?
Question:
I'm making a small coffee table out of heavy duty cardboard. I want to decoupage the entire thing, but not sure what glue to use, Modge Podge is too expensive to cover a whole table, I heard white glue, like Elmers mixed with water will work. Would it?
& do I have to seal it afterwards? I am too sensitive to lacquers & things like that, will the glue be enough to seal it all or is there something less potent than a lacquer that I can use?
Anything other suggestions?
Thank you for any answers! Will reward 10 points for best!
Answer:
"Decoupage mediums" (like the various versions of ModPodge or Royal Coat, etc.) are just permanent white glues like Elmers GlueAll for example (don't get the "washable" Elmers) which have already been thinned down with water. And thinned-white-glue is what many decoupagers use for doing decoupage anyway.
White glue is both an adhesive and a sealer so it's used under and on top of each bit of paper added, as well as however many coats on the final finished top it takes to make the entire surface perfectly flat.
(Be sure and let each coat dry throughly before adding the next.
Also, if your box is brown I'd suggest painting it first with permanent white paint so the colors of the papers you add will look vibrant and not darkened when placed on that background...or you could just use white paper as your first layer or two to do the same thing.)
White glues aren't as resistant to scratching and moisture as some other clear sealers though, so you may want to add a coat of clear polyurethane (from the hardware store, and not a problem health-wise--esp. for the water-based ones) as the last coat to give even more protection from scratching and moisture. This could keep it from later feeling tacky too if you live in a high-humidity area.)
(If you were decoupaging a smaller item, you could even use clear fingernail polish.)
P.S. If you ever "get tired" of your decoupage before the table itself gets wonky**, just sand the surface lightly and until it's smooth then decoupage something new right over the old decoupage.
**coating the entire table including the parts on the ground can help keep that from happening to some degree
