I recently started to hear a lot about the differences of Early Buddhism and modern Buddhism....?
Question:
I hear that there are big differences between the two(Pali and Theravada (Sarvastivada) or Mahayana (Mahasanghika)),
To quote the late metaphysician, Dr. A.K. Coomaraswamy: “Buddhism is most famous today for everything it originally never taught.”--
My question what are some of the differences?
" It seems odd that modern Buddhists should say of the Buddha that he taught the rejection of the soul so that we should cling to the six senses and their bases"
Answer:
This is a book's worth of topic here. But I am going to try really hard to make it simple with regards to one of the major teachings.
The Atman(no-self) teaching in Theravada is based on the idea of skillfulness. Identify with things as "I, mine, myself" is a form of clinging that causes suffering. The Buddha never said that "the self exists" or "the self doesn't exist." Both are considered "a thicket of views." See Thanissaro Bhikkhus "the Not Self Strategy." (Below in sources).
In Mahayana this doctrine is more based on the idea that all things are illusory, and empty of any inherent existence. "Emptiness" or shunyata is a big teaching in Mahayana.
Where the Buddha said "all conditioned things are anicca, anatta, dukkha" (impermanent, not-self, stressful) Mahayana will generally say that all things are empty - they have no intrinsic existence.
This effects the "not-self" teaching, becuase the self is not seen only as something we cling to, but something that was never "there" to begin with. Hui-neng, the fifth Patriarch (who is considered the "founder" of "modern Zen") said "from the first, nothing is."
Also in Mahayana you find the teaching of "Buddha nature," something that, ironically, the Buddha never talked about in the Pali Canon.
In Theravada enlightenment is seen more as something that you have to work towards by eliminating "defilements" or "taints" of the mind over time.
In Mahayana the understanding is that enlightenment is fundamental to all beings - that we are already awakened and that we just need to realize this through the realization of emptiness.
It makes sense that since all these "defilements" are also empty of any inherent existence, that we are already awakened and simply need to realize that and experience it directly.
I hope that made sense. Generally, to get the idea just research the ideas of Notself (anatta or anatman), Buddha Nature and Emptiness, and see how the different traditions view them.
