question about a very old knife possibly civil war?

I have a very very old knife it looks to be handmade and well used . it is 14 and 1/4 inches long the wood part is 5 inches long, the blade has a slight curve upwards from the handle going up to the tip. on the black handle is three gold stars on each side. if i look with a magnifying glass at the handle real close, it looks like an arrow and looks like it says GOL and possibly a D. the blade goes the complete distance of the knife and the gold stars have a gold round piece in the middle that goes all the way through the knife. You can tell it had use and is really old. i really think the gold is real! Am trying to find a pciture of something similiar and value please help if you have info on this or something similiar. Thank you. I am needing to sell items to get braces on my sons teeth. So got it out it has been in my family for years but dad died and do not know the history.
