Calcium Carbonate(limestone) and acid?
Question:
Hi everyone i'm a little confused. When Calcium Carbonate (which is found in limestone) reacts with acid rain doesn't the Calcium ion in the calcium carbonate displace the hydrogen ion from the acid which then in turn dissolves for say the limestone? And then isn't Carbon dioxide released soaking up the hydrogen and cuasing the limestone to dissolve? If somone could explain this to me i would really appreciate it!! Thank you all!!

Have a look at the equation:
CaCO3(s) + 2HNO3(aq) --> Ca(NO3)2(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g).
An acid is a H+ donor. It likes giving them away. So when they react, the acid donates its H+ to one of the oxygens on the carbonate. This makes the oxygen turn into water and leave the carbonate ion. Now that the carbonate ion has lost its charge and become CO2, it leaves the Ca2+ which dissolves in the water.
When ionic compounds are dissolved in water, the ions are completely dissociated, i.e. not together. So while when looking at the equation, it's easy to say that the H is being displaced by the Ca. But since the Ca2+ and the NO3- are not together, the idea of displacement isn't really happening. We usually use displacement when considering an equation like this:
Zn(s) + Cu(NO3)2(aq) --> Zn(NO3)2(aq) + Cu(s). The Zn and Cu have quite literally swapped places. So we can say displacement in this situation, even though the nitrate ion was never with the Cu or the Zn in solution.
